The YouTube Equalizer Problem: One Curve Cannot Fit Every Tab
A curve that rescues a quiet lecture ruins a mastered album. If you keep adjusting the same equalizer every time you switch tabs, the problem is not the curve — it is that you only have one. Here is how per-site audio profiles fix it.

Here is a morning that repeats itself.
You open a recorded lecture. The speaker was two metres from the microphone, so you lift
the mids and push the volume until you can follow it. An hour later you switch to an
album, and it is a wall of honking midrange — the curve that rescued the lecture is
destroying the music. So you flatten it. Then a film, where the dialogue is a whisper
under an enormous score, and you start again.
By the third adjustment most people give up and leave the equalizer flat, which means
they installed one for nothing.
The problem is not that you picked the wrong curve. It is that you only have one.
Why one curve cannot work
Different material is broken in different directions.
- Speech recorded badly is usually thin and indistinct, with the intelligibility range
(roughly 1–4 kHz) sitting too low relative to room noise. It wants a lift there and
often a cut below 150 Hz to get rid of rumble. - Music is already mastered by someone whose job it was. It generally wants nothing,
or a gentle shelf to suit your particular headphones — not a speech curve. - Film and television have enormous dynamic range on purpose. Dialogue and explosions
are meant to be far apart, which works in a cinema and not at all on a laptop at
11 p.m. - Video calls are narrowband and compressed already; boosting the top end mostly
boosts hiss.
Applying one curve to all four means three of them are wrong. And since you consume them
on different sites, the site itself is a near-perfect signal for which curve you want.
Per-site profiles: the setting that applies itself
That is the idea behind per-site profiles in
JSK SoundShape. Adjust the equalizer on a
site, and those settings are saved against that site. Return tomorrow and they are
already applied. There is no switching, no naming, no "load profile" step — the
adjustment is the save.
Profiles are keyed to the site's origin — https://www.youtube.com, not "YouTube" —
which has two consequences worth knowing. http:// and https:// versions of a site are
treated separately, because they are genuinely different security contexts. And
localhost:3000 and localhost:8080 keep separate profiles, which matters if you develop
audio applications.
All of this is in the free tier and needs no account. There is no cap on how many
sites you save.
A worked setup
Here is a concrete configuration for someone who does all four of the above in a browser.
Fifteen minutes once, then never again.

Two habits make the difference between guessing and knowing:
Use hold-to-compare constantly. Press and hold the compare button to hear the tab
completely unprocessed. This matters more than it sounds: your hearing adapts to a new
curve within about a minute and then tells you it was always like that. An A/B is the
only reliable way to know whether you improved something or merely made it louder. Half
the "great EQ settings" posted online are just a volume increase in disguise.
Watch the spectrum while you adjust. The live visualizer shows where the energy
actually is. If you are convinced a recording is bass-heavy and the display shows nothing
below 100 Hz, the problem is elsewhere — usually too much 200–400 Hz, which reads as
"muddy" rather than "bassy".
When one site needs two settings
YouTube breaks the site-equals-profile assumption on its own: a lecture and a music video
live at the same origin.
Two ways through this. Per-tab overrides — also free — let a second tab on the same
site hold different settings from the first; the override wins while that tab is open and
is discarded when you close it. That covers the occasional exception without polluting
your saved profile.
For a permanent split you want advanced site rules (Pro), which match wildcard
patterns like *.youtube.com and can be restricted to a time-of-day window — so film
sites get night mode after 10 p.m. and normal treatment during the day, automatically.
Being upfront: per-tab overrides are free, scheduled rules are not.
The tabs that cannot be equalised
You will meet three cases where nothing applies, and knowing them saves you assuming the
tool is broken:
DRM-protected audio. Several large streaming services encrypt their audio end to end.
No browser extension can process it — an extension that appears to work there is showing
you a control that does nothing. SoundShape tells you when this is what you have hit,
which sounds like a small thing until you have spent twenty minutes wondering why your
sliders stopped mattering.
Browser-internal pages. chrome://, about: and the extension stores are off-limits
to every extension.
A tab something else has captured. Only one extension may capture a given tab; a
running screen share counts as one.
Moving your setup between machines
Two facilities, and they sit on different sides of the account line:
Export is free and requires no account — a JSON file with every profile and preset.
Data portability is deliberately not something you have to sign up for; you should always
be able to leave with what you made.
Import needs a free JSKAPPS account, as does migration from EqualizerAPO or AutoEQ
profile files. That is the honest boundary: taking your data out costs nothing, bringing
data in is where the account earns its place.
The point
An equalizer you have to operate is an equalizer you stop operating. The value is not in
having ten sliders — it is in never touching them again after the first week, because
each site already sounds the way you decided it should.
Set up your five most-used sites once. Then forget the extension exists, which is the
highest compliment a utility can be paid.
