JSK Photo Studio documentation
Installation
Install from the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons or Firefox Add-ons (store links are added once the listings are live). On first run the workspace opens in a normal browser tab.
There is no onboarding, no sign-up wall and no trial countdown. The extension requests one permission — storage — and no access to any website.
Setup and account
JSK Photo Studio works without an account. Document sizes, cropping, the compliance card, scanning, print sheets and PDF export are all available immediately and at no cost.
To connect an account, open Settings from the gear icon, paste a JSKAPPS API key from jskapps.com/dashboard/api-keys, and click Connect. The account chip in the toolbar shows which tier you are on: Instant, Free or Pro.
To disconnect, click Disconnect in Settings. Your local work is untouched.
Core concepts
Modes. The workspace has four: Merge combines images; Photo produces a single document photo; Scan straightens a photographed document; Sheet tiles one photo across a page for printing. All four share the same Sources column, so a photo you add once is available everywhere.
Millimetres, not just pixels. A document specification is physical — 35 × 45 mm — and pixels only become physical when a resolution is declared. JSK Photo Studio works in millimetres at a stated DPI and writes that resolution into the exported file, which is what makes a printed photo measure correctly.
Sourced sizes. Every built-in document size carries a link to the issuing authority's own published specification and the date it was last checked. Where we have not personally read the authority's page, the size says so rather than implying a verification that did not happen.
Tiers. Instant needs no account. Free needs a JSKAPPS account and adds saved projects and custom sizes. Pro is paid and adds the photo editor, HEIC, automated size targeting and the multi-person and duplex sheet layouts.
Feature guide
Document sizes — Instant
Search by name, local name, country or pixel dimensions. Reisepass, IN, and 413x531 all find matching entries. The requirements panel shows the target pixels, any published file-size band, the required background, the head-height band, the verification state and a link to the authority's page.
Custom document sizes — Free account
Choose Custom size at the top of the size list. Enter width and height in millimetres or pixels along with a DPI; the readout shows both units at once, because they are the same fact stated two ways. A size typed in pixels exports at exactly those pixels. Available in Photo, Scan and Sheet.
The compliance card — Instant
Drag the crown and chin lines onto the top of the head and the bottom of the chin. The card then reports head height as a percentage of the frame against the document's published band, plus resolution, aspect ratio and background checks. It reports numbers and says "looks compliant", never "accepted" — the issuing authority decides.
File-size targeting — readout Instant, automation Pro
The export bar shows the real encoded size as you adjust quality. Size target lets you enter a minimum and maximum in kilobytes; the readout turns green inside the band. On a paid plan, Hit it searches for a qualifying quality automatically. Portal profiles pre-fill known bands; those taken from a verified authority page are marked as such, and the rest are labelled unverified.
Print sheets — Instant
Choose a paper size and a photo size; the extension computes how many fit and refuses configurations that would overflow, stating the overflow in millimetres rather than silently clipping. The badge reports the arrangement and the margins you will actually measure — the block is centred, so the real margin is usually larger than the minimum you set. Cut guides can be full, corners only, or off. Download PDF produces a page box in true millimetres.
Printer calibration — Instant
Printers are not exact. Print the calibration sheet once at 100%, measure the 100 mm ruler with a real ruler, and enter what you measured. Every sheet after that is corrected by the difference.
Scan mode — Instant
Add a photo of a document or card and drag the four corner dots onto its corners. The outline shows the region that will be straightened. Photocopy flattens uneven lighting while keeping tone, so faces still look like photographs; Text produces stark black-on-white, which is correct for text and will turn a face into line art; Colour keeps colour and improves contrast.
The photo editor — Pro
Opens from the ✎ on a photo's row in Sources. Free-form drag crop with eight handles, 15 aspect presets, a straighten slider to ±45°, rotate 90° in both directions, and horizontal and vertical flips. Edits apply to the source, so all four modes use the result. It is non-destructive: reopening lets you widen a crop again, not only tighten it.
Multi-person and back-to-back sheets — Pro
Who is on this sheet puts different people in different slots. Back-to-back ID cards exports a second, mirrored page so each card back prints behind its own front; it needs two photos — the card front and its reverse.
Merge — Instant
Combine any number of images as a grid, row or column, with numeric control of columns, gap and outer padding. Fit modes (contain, cover, fill) apply to grid arrangements; row and column give each photo a cell at its own aspect ratio, so there is nothing to letterbox or crop.
Settings and options
- Theme — System, Light or Dark. Default: System, which follows your operating system.
- Account — connect or disconnect a JSKAPPS API key. Default: no account.
- Clear all local data — removes saved projects, any resumable session and your settings. Asks for confirmation first.
- Panel layout — every panel can be docked left, right, top or bottom and resized by dragging its divider. Reset layout restores the default.
- Image format — JPEG, PNG or WEBP, per mode. Default: JPEG.
- Cut guides — Full, Corners or Off. Default: Corners.
- Minimum margin and gap — in millimetres, for print sheets. Defaults: 5 mm margin, 2 mm gap.
Keyboard shortcuts
- Ctrl+V — paste an image from the clipboard into the workspace
- Escape — close the photo editor or a confirmation dialog
Limitations and known issues
- WEBP carries no print resolution. The WEBP container cannot record a DPI that print tools honour, so a WEBP export will not print at a guaranteed physical size. The format picker says so before you download. Use JPEG or PNG for anything you intend to print.
- 25 of the 32 built-in sizes have not yet been read against the issuing authority's page by us. Their geometry comes from widely published standards and they are marked "not yet verified" in the app. They carry no kilobyte band, because a wrong kilobyte limit is the difference between an accepted and a rejected application.
- Head height is measured from where you place the guides, not by face detection. This is deliberate — a wrong automatic measurement is worse than an honest manual one — but it does mean the number is only as good as your placement.
- Automated file-size targeting is not available in Photo mode yet. Photo mode shows the document's kilobyte requirement but exports at a fixed quality; use Merge mode's size target, or a paid plan's automated search, to hit a band exactly.
- Photo, Scan and Sheet settings reset when you switch tabs. Their controls are per-visit; the photos themselves are shared and persist.
- Printing accuracy depends on your printer. Use the calibration sheet if the ruler disagrees.
Troubleshooting
- Printed output is the wrong size — printed with "Fit to page" instead of "Actual size" / 100%. Reprint at 100%; if still off, run the calibration sheet.
- Sheet badge is red — the configuration overflows the printable area. It states the overflow in millimetres; reduce the margin or gap, or use larger paper.
- A downloaded file reports 96 DPI — you exported WEBP, which cannot carry a resolution. Export JPEG or PNG instead.
- The account chip says Instant after connecting a key — the key may be scoped to a different product, or the plan may not be active. Reconnect with a key scoped to JSK Photo Studio.
- Nothing happens when I drop a file — check the file is a JPEG, PNG or WEBP. HEIC needs a paid plan.
Uninstalling
Remove the extension from your browser's extensions page. Its local storage — saved projects, sessions and settings — is removed with it. If you want to clear that data before uninstalling, use Clear all local data in Settings first.
