JSK ClipKeep documentation

Installation

Install from the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons or Firefox Add-ons, then click the ClipKeep icon in your toolbar. You may need to pin it: click the puzzle-piece icon and pin ClipKeep.

On first run you will see a screen headed "ClipKeep is on." It explains the two permission warnings your browser showed at install, lists three things worth knowing, and offers a Try an example button that stores a real clip through the real pipeline. Press Start using it to dismiss it — it is shown once.

Setup and account

ClipKeep works completely without an account. Unlimited history, search, pinning, paste-into-field, encryption, secret detection, the never-capture list, the PIN lock and JSON export are all available the moment you install it, with no sign-in and no network access at all.

To connect a JSKAPPS account, open Settings and find Your plan. Paste a jsk_live_… API key created at jskapps.com/dashboard/api-keys and press Connect. Scope the key to ClipKeep so it cannot be used elsewhere.

Signing in asks for no new browser permission.

To disconnect, press Disconnect on the same screen. Nothing is deleted — you drop back to the no-account tier and every clip, tag, snippet and folder stays exactly where it is.

Core concepts

A clip is one thing you copied. It has text or an image, the site it came from, a timestamp, and any tags you add. Clip content is always encrypted.

A secret is a clip ClipKeep recognised as a credential — an AWS key, a Stripe key, a GitHub token, a JWT, a private key, a card number and seven other formats. Secrets are stored masked and expire on their own unless pinned.

The never-capture list is a set of sites ClipKeep refuses to store anything from. It ships with 36 entries covering password managers, identity providers, cloud consoles and banks. Matching covers subdomains, so bank.com also covers secure.bank.com, but never notbank.com.

A snippet is a clip you promoted to something permanent and named. On Pro, a snippet body can be a template that fills itself in.

Capturing and refusing

Every copy on a page is captured. Copies made in other applications are also captured on Chrome and Edge; on Firefox they are not.

ClipKeep refuses to store a copy when capture is paused, when you are in a private window, when the site is on your never-capture list, when the copy came from a password or one-time-code field, when the clip is a duplicate of the one already at the top, or when the vault is locked. In every case it tells you which — it never refuses silently. (Instant.)

Search

Type in the search box to filter by clip text, tags, or the source site — the source is searchable even though it is not in the visible text. (Instant; tag search needs Free.)

Secret detection

Twelve formats are recognised. A detected secret is shown amber with a badge naming the type and a countdown, with the distinguishing middle of the value never rendered. It deletes itself after the window unless you pin it. Ordinary developer strings — git SHAs, UUIDs, ISO timestamps, phone numbers — are deliberately not flagged. (Instant.)

Never-capture list

Settings, then Never captured. Type a site and press Add site, or use Add the site you are on. Remove any entry with its × ; the panel states plainly that copies there will now be saved. Restore the shipped list puts the 36 defaults back. (Instant.)

Tags and snippets

Add tags to any clip with the + Tag control under each row. Save a permanent snippet under the Snippets tab: give it a name, an optional shortcut and a body. (Free.)

Templates

On Pro, a snippet body can contain placeholders that fill themselves in when you use it: the date, the time, whatever is on your clipboard right now, a marker for where the cursor should land, fill-in-the-blank fields you are prompted for, and references to other snippets. A Free user who writes a template gets the literal text when they use it, with a note — never an error and never an empty paste. (Pro.)

Transform recipes

Chainable steps applied to a clip: case changes, whitespace tidying, JSON pretty-print and minify, Markdown to HTML and back, stripping tracking parameters from URLs, sorting and de-duplicating lines, and find-and-replace with optional regular expressions. Each step previews against the selected clip as you build it. (Pro.)

Folders and smart collections

Folders are a hierarchy you file clips into by hand. Smart collections are saved rules — "tagged invoice, from the last 30 days" — evaluated every time you look, so a clip captured a minute ago joins on its own. (Pro.)

Per-site rules

Rules that act on a site automatically: tag everything from it, keep only images, keep only text, expire everything after a set number of minutes, or never capture. Site rules can only ever narrow what is stored — no rule can override a safety refusal. (Pro.)

Paste queue

Select several clips and press Queue. Each press of the paste control sends the next one in order, for filling a form from a list. It does not loop back to the start when it runs out; it says it has finished. (Pro.)

PIN lock

Settings, then Lock with a PIN. You are shown a recovery key exactly once — write it down. While locked, nothing can be decrypted and nothing new is captured, in every part of the extension. Wrong PINs are throttled progressively rather than locking you out permanently, and the recovery key is never throttled. (Instant.)

Export and the portable vault

JSON export needs no account. CSV and plain text need a free account. Detected secrets are excluded from exports unless you explicitly tick the box, because an export is a plaintext file that lands in your downloads folder.

Pro adds a passphrase-encrypted vault file holding clips, snippets, folders, collections, recipes and site rules, which opens on another machine with the same passphrase. If you lose the passphrase the file cannot be opened, by you or by us. (Instant / Free / Pro.)

Settings and options

  • Capture toggle — pauses and resumes capture. Default: on.
  • Never captured — the excluded-site list. Default: 36 shipped entries.
  • Include detected secrets in exports — default: off.
  • Automatic clean-up rules — delete clips older than a chosen age. Default: none. Pinned clips are exempt unless you say otherwise.
  • Clean-up schedule — how often clean-up runs. Default: only when you ask. (Pro.)
  • Site rules — per-site automation. Default: none. (Pro.)
  • Lock with a PIN — default: off.

Keyboard shortcuts

Shortcuts ship unassigned on purpose: a suggested combination that is already taken by the browser or another extension fails silently, which is worse than having none. Set your own at chrome://extensions/shortcuts (Chrome) or edge://extensions/shortcuts (Edge).

  • Open ClipKeep — opens the side panel, or the sidebar on Firefox.
  • Paste the most recent clip — pastes your newest clip into the focused field without opening anything.
  • Pause or resume capture — toggles capture.

Inside the popup, the keyboard alone is enough: it opens focused on search, arrow keys move the selection, Enter pastes into the field you were in, and Escape closes.

Limitations and known issues

  • Firefox does not capture copies made outside the browser. Only copies made on web pages are saved. Chrome and Edge capture both.
  • There is no sync between devices. Nothing leaves your machine. The Pro vault file is the manual equivalent.
  • Right-click "Copy image" does not fire a page copy event in Chrome, so that route is served by the clipboard reader and needs the browser focused. It can take a second or two.
  • English only in this version. A half-finished translation reads as broken, so we have not shipped one.
  • A copy made in another application while a never-capture site is your frontmost tab is refused. The clipboard reader cannot tell where such a copy came from, and we would rather skip a clip than break a promise.

Troubleshooting

Symptom: a clip did not appear. Cause: it was refused. Fix: read the message in the panel — capture paused, never-capture site, password field, duplicate, or locked vault.

Symptom: nothing at all is captured. Cause: usually a locked vault or paused capture. Fix: open Settings and check both.

Symptom: rows read "(could not decrypt)". Cause: the vault is locked. Fix: unlock with your PIN, or the recovery key.

Symptom: the Folders or Snippets tab shows a lock badge although you have paid. Cause: the plan had not resolved yet when you clicked. Fix: wait a moment and click again; if it persists, disconnect and reconnect your key.

Symptom: an old clip vanished. Cause: a detected secret expired, or an automatic clean-up rule removed it. Fix: pin anything you want kept — pinned clips are exempt from both.

Uninstalling

Remove ClipKeep from your browser's extensions page. This deletes the local database and every clip in it immediately and irreversibly. Export first if you want to keep anything. Your browser will open a short feedback page on jskapps.com afterwards.
